Abstract: The article deals with the experience of EU in development of unitized three level typology of territories consisted of three interconnected blocs .The whole construction of typology rest on a special methodological basement, so called “population grid”. The content of methodology is studied and described, detailed characteristics of methods used to identify territories of urban clusters and rural grid cells are laid down. Analyses of basic types of territory typologies in EU in the content of the functional and structural characteristics made (typology of clusters, degree of urbanization typology, urban-rural typology). Standards for classification of territories according to character o population (rural, urban) are studied (rural areas, cities(high-density territories), towns and suburbs (intermediate density territories). Statistic information on types of territories according to the criteria of population are given in the article (selectively).
