Abstract: All of Russia's constituent regions have always differed significantly in their levels of economic, social, and infrastructural development. Such disparities are due to historical factors, the different geographic locations of the regions, their distance from resource centers and markets, and other factors. In this article, the authors examine Russia's problematic territories-depressed regions characterized by low socioeconomic development indicators due to a combination of unfavorable conditions. Ten constituent entities of the Russian Federation currently recognized by the Russian Government as depressed regions are identified and their rankings are presented based on various criteria. Using the Kurgan Region, currently among Russia's lagging regions, as an example, the key indicators of this region's socioeconomic development are analyzed and their dynamics presented. Stagnation in the agricultural sector of any constituent entity of the Russian Federation is a fairly common sign of a region's depression. The authors examine the impact of agricultural producers in the Kurgan Region on the development of this depressed region of Russia. It is noted that no depressed region can solve its socioeconomic development problems on its own; significant assistance from government agencies is required, meaning promising areas and forms of state support for the agricultural sector are essential. The authors highlight key areas of state support for the agro-industrial complex in the Kurgan Region currently facing a budget deficit.
