Abstract: The article examines the evolution of the concept of sustainable rural development in foreign studies of the 21st century, analyzes the transition from the traditional "city–village" dichotomy to a systematic approach that takes into account the interrelationship of economic, social and environmental aspects. Special attention is paid to the role of the ESG agenda as a tool for operationalizing sustainable development in corporate and regional strategies. Based on the analysis of foreign experience, the stages of development of rural sustainability research, key drivers and methodological shifts are highlighted. The conclusion is drawn about the need for an integrated, multi-scale and interdisciplinary approach to ensuring the sustainability of rural areas in the context of global challenges/
