Abstract: The article clarifies the theoretical aspects of the effective functioning of the Russian economy in terms of ensuring food security. The assessment of its state after the imposition of sanctions and the orientation of the state on the import substitution policy. The dynamics of indicators, reflecting the development of agricultural sectors, is given, trends in the provision of the population with the basic food products are identified. Proposals on the improvement of the mechanism of ensuring country’s food security were developed.
